Maritime Women’s Basketball Association: Season 5 Preview
April 24, 2026
This May, the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association (MWBA) tips off its fifth season, bringing together top talent from across the Maritimes. With four teams in New Brunswick and four in Nova Scotia, the league continues to grow as the top stage for amateur basketball in the region.
The purpose of the MWBA is clear: to provide opportunities for current and former players to remain involved in the game at a high level. But the league’s impact extends beyond competition. The MWBA also creates development opportunities for women officials, coaches, and managers, ensuring women are represented and supported across the league.
The MWBA is equally committed to inspiring the next generation. Each team serves as a powerful role model for youth in its community. And the support goes both ways, with local girls and other fans filling the stands to cheer on their teams.
Last season saw the Miramichi Her-icanes defeat the Lake City 56ers in overtime in the championship game, while the Halifax Thunder beat the Fredericton Freeze to claim third place. With the addition of the Truro Tidal Queens as the eighth team, this season promises to be another exciting one.
Games kick off on Saturday, May 2, with all eight teams in action during opening weekend. The season will conclude with the PRO•LINE Legacy Cup at the Richard J. Currie Center in Fredericton from June 21-22. Check out the full schedule and updates from the league at themwba.ca!
